Benedictine monks that first established the site as a place of daily worship until Henry the III began construction in 1245 on one of the most striking Gothic buildings in the country. Westminster Abbey is famous for its burial shrine of St. Edward the Confessor, the tombs of kings and Queens and memorials to the heroes of England. Westminster Abbey is considered to be a wealth of art with paintings, stained glass, pavements, textiles and various other artifacts displaying the culture, wealth and power of the Britian from ancient days to present (Architecture, n.d.). Initially known as St. Peter’s Abbey, Westminster Abbey rose from the legend of a young fisherman who is said to have seen a vision of St. Peter on or near the site of the Thames River. The abbey was formerly titled the Collegiate Church of St. Peter and is one of the greatest religious buildings famous for historic coronations and also as a burial site for the English and later British Monarchs. Since William the Conqueror reign in 1066, Westminster Abbey has been the setting for every coronation for all of Britain’s Kings and Queen including 16 royal weddings. The Abbey is one of the most significant architecture structures because its development represents centuries that represent humble beginnings of a monastery, to church reformation, to a journey from a feudal society to what we know as democracy.
