It is debated that this letter was dated c. A.D.64, during the reign of Nero to which there are evidence of persecution in the Roman Empire, and also that it was written in the early second century in the case of Peter not being the author. Concerning the date of 1 Peter it is difficult to pin point exactly when it was written, because of the fact that there is too little information chronologically or geographically to locate the persecution spoken of, General Letters (2012:176). 2.1.2 Literary context of the book of First Peter Regarding the integrity of this letter, it is certainly very visible that the author intended to make known the urgency of trials that people face and also will face. It is evident that the author chose to write two letters deliberately, one to the people who are faced with the social pressures but aren’t faced with persecution as much and the second which is very urgent to the people who already face trials. Unfortunately we cannot say with confidence that this was the case concerning the reason for two letters, seeing that there any aren’t support in manuscripts to make these understandings more concrete, Michaels (2000:n.p.). According to Timothy (Finney, 2010) this letter after it was written was distributed through Asia Minor. Therefore it is with certainty how many copies there were. “Our earliest surviving copy of 1 Peter is papyrus manuscript P72, dated around 300 CE. It is constructed from pieces of a number of codices and contains 1 Peter, 2 Peter, and Jude along with a number of non- canonical writings”, Timothy (Finney, 2010) . Timothy (Finney, 2010) also claimed that “ Our earliest surviving copy of the text is dated about two centuries after the original. Without having the original, it is impossible to say how much the reconstructed text used today” The book of 1 Peter can be divided into 3 parts of which the first part we read about is centred into the identity of the people as new born in the Christian faith and how blessed they are to have received this salvation. 9

The second part of the letter urges people to have responsibility towards God and one another in areas of mutual love, ministry and hospitality. The third and last part of this letter is about the mutual responsibilities of older and younger members of the congregation, Michaels (2000:n.p.). 2.1.3 The Theological Themes of the book of 1 Peter Through the house hold codes, Peter makes it very clear that wives must be submissive to their husbands. In the times of Greco-Roman antiquity the role of a woman was very inferior to men. For example when a woman converted to Christianity, without her husband getting saved, it was viewed as a defiance act by his wife and he would be embarrassed and ashamed. This would have put tension on marriages and causes hostility toward Christianity and Christians to increase.
