Accidents happen in large numbers b/c employers wanted to save money. Ex: No ventilator whichcause workers to die. No laws that states a factory needs safety signs so most don’t both to install it. NYC Triangle Fire: Part of the garment industry, with 4 floors.i.If the women did not finish their work, they had to bring it home & finish it to make surethat their wage doesn’t get lowered.ii.Before the fire occurred, the women went on strike; stating that the wage is very low &that there is trash everywhere. The strike failed and led to consequences. The ownerswere cousins and were worried that a union would happen & that they would stealclothes; they locked the main door of the buildings. Even during that time, it was illegalto lock doors in case of fire hazards. iii.Speculated that the fire happens in a trash bin in the 7thfloor caused by a cigarette. Eventhough they saw the fire, they didn’t leave. The people on the 8th, 9th, 10thfloor didn’tknow. As 7thfloor was leaving, the other floors on the bottom found out because theysaw them leaving. iv.Mistakes: Happened in the middle of rush hour.1.Those on top run to the elevators; they didn’t see the elevator coming cause ofthe smoke & ended up falling.2.Some run to the stairs, some did escape while some didn’t because the firestarted from the bottom. Some ran to the fire escape, however it started tomelt and peel off. 3.Some ran to the building ledges, but the fire ladders can only go up to 6thfloor.The fire was blowing huge through the windows. Some women’s dress & haireven got burned. So, you can either jump down or hold onto the ledges. v.Although this happened, the owners didn’t go to jail because they did not mean to killthe workers by closing the doors. NYC were the first to pass & enforce fire safety laws.
