32 For Official Use Only 6.7 Supply Support ETTS Element 5.5/5.6/5.29 Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability (SM&R) Codes GS-7 SM&R codes are used to communicate maintenance and supply instructions to logistic support levels and using commands for the logistic support of system, equipment, and end items. The governing source for SM&R codes is the Master Item File. SM&R codes are made available to intended users by means of technical publications such as allowance lists, Illustrated Parts Breakdown manuals, maintenance manuals, and supply documents. These codes are assigned to each support item based on the logistics support planned for the end item and its components.

33 For Official Use Only 6.7 Supply Support ETTS Element 5.5/5.6 SM&R Codes (Cont) GS-7 SM&R codes are used to identify the source of spares, repair parts, and end items of support equipment and the levels of maintenance authorized to use, maintain, overhaul, rework, or condemn them. The initial assignment of and subsequent changes to SM&R codes significantly affect funding appropriations and requirements determination and have an impact on all Product Support elements. SM&R codes shall be assigned to support items during the initial acquisition phase of end items of material. These codes also may be applied to support items already in the supply system or to support items that enter the supply system after initial acquisition of the end item.

34 For Official Use Only 6.7 Supply Support ETTS Element 5.5/5.6 SM&R Codes (Cont) GS-7 The SM&R code assigned to each support item is a record of a technical decision that adequately considers the design, manufacture, application, maintenance, and supply practices and capabilities of each support item and of the end items’ operational missions. Uniform SM&R codes shall be assigned in accordance with the progressive maintenance concept. Progressive repair is the SM&R coding philosophy that uses the fourth and fifth positions of the uniform SM&R code format to indicate that an item can have some repair performed at one level but total repair is authorized at a higher maintenance level.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
