Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder: A sexual dysfunction characterized by significant physical discomfort during intercourse Affects more women than men The outer 3 rd of the vagina involuntarily contracts, preventing entry of the penis (vaginismus) prevents couple from having intercourse; fewer than 1% of women affected, have strong sex drive, greatly enjoy sex, have orgasm due to stimulation of clitoris, but fear discomfort of penetration of the vagina Cognitive-Behaviorist believe that this is a learned fear response set off by a woman’s expectation that intercourse will be painful Fears include: Anxiety and Ignorance about intercourse, exaggerated stories about how painful and bloody the 1 st time is, trauma caused by an unskilled lover who forces his penis into the vagina before the woman is aroused and lubricated, and the trauma of childhood sexual abuse or adult rape Caused by infection of the vagina or urinary tract, a gynecological disease(herpes simplex, or the physical effects of menopause)can be treated Do not have involuntary contractions of their vaginal muscles, but they do experience sever vaginal or pelvic pain during sexual intercourse(dyspareunia) 14% suffer from this problem_ Enjoy sex and get aroused; but find their sex lives very limited by the pain that accompanies what used to be positive event Physical causes such as injury (most common) during childbirth Scar left by episiotomy 16% of women have sever vaginal or pelvic pain during intercourse for up to a yr. after giving birth Pain tied to penis guiding against leftover hymen tissue, vaginal infections, wiry pubic hair rubbing against the labia during intercourse, pelvic diseases, tumors, cysts, allergic reactions to the chemicals in vaginal douches and contraceptive creams, the rubber in condoms and diaphragms, and the protein in semen Psychosocial factors alone responsible; psychogenic, the woman may suffer from female sexual interest/arousal disorder 3% men suffer pain in genitals during intercourse
