Almost married when she was fifteen and, for perhaps the only time in her life, she was happy. Until a jinn had entered her body (a supernatural creature/seizure) and the wedding was called off Recounts giving birth to Mariam by herself Muhsin Jalil’s eldest son by his first wife, Khadija, suggested the clearing where Nana and Mariam live Built the kolba with Farhad and Jalil Farhad Built the small kolba where Mariam lived for the first fifteen years of her life Plot Development Jalil made a deal with his family that Nana must be taken care of once she moves out Muhsin finds a clearing on the outskirts of Gul Daman where Jalil builds them a “rat hole” (9) Nana tells Mariam the story of how she was almost married, but the wedding was called off when they were spooked (10) Nana recounts the day she gave birth to Mariam. Jalil didn’t bother calling a doctor or a midwife, so Nana lay on the floor by herself with a knife When she was ten, explained this story to her father and he said it was untrue. His version of the story includes Nana being taken to a hospital where she had been tended to by a doctor According to Nana, Mariam was named after her mother; according to Jalil, she was named after one of his favourite flowers Literary Devices Theme – Multiple truths 2

As Mariam listens to both her father’s and mother’s stories of her birth, there is no hint as to which one is ‘true’ or ‘right’. These two stories side by side create a full story of the three characters. As well, the two stories show their contrasting parenting styles Setting Nana and Mariam’s kolba and the surrounding hillside Character Development Nana On Ration Day she would stand in the doorway with rocks in her pockets. She would throw rocks at the boys, yell at them, call them names as they carried bags of rice into the kolba , and curse their mothers Mariam Felt sorry for the boys that she wasn’t allowed to offer them water or wave back. She once yelled at Muhsin to please Nana Explains to Mullah Faizullah that she wishes she could go to real school, like her half-siblings Habib Kahn One of the few people Nana did not despise “Gul Daman’s leader, the village arbab , … a small-headed, bearded man with a large belly who came by once a month or so, tailed by a servant, who carried a chicken, sometimes a pot of kichiri rice, or a basket of dyed eggs for Mariam” (15). Bibi jo The other person Nana did not despise Her late husband was a friend of Nana’s father. She was always accompanied by one of her six brides or a grandchild or two. As well, she always brought Mariam something, a box of dishlemeh candy, a basket of quinces She complained about her health and brought gossip from Herat and Gul Daman Mullah Faizullah Mariam’s favourite, the village Koran tutor, who also taught Nana He came by once or twice a week to teach Mariam the five daily namaz prayers and tutor her in Koran recitation
