Over the course of a five-decade career, Dylan has effectively discussed the particular figures he chooses to address within his stories/songs. I found it extremely fascinating that Dylan would never write a song or tell the story of a real or folk loric figure without reading vast amounts about them. he was able to write one of the most recognized protest songs ever composed. Even more fascinating is, that even though he had no intention of it happening, the song was commercially very successful. So he managed to do what so few are ever able to even comprehend, compose a powerful message that reaches the people, both in their pockets and in their minds. So what is it about Zimmerman that makes him the prophet he is known the world over as today? Is it his musical genius? Is it his ability to fight the machine… and win? He has written songs that were so powerful, that even the cover versions of them (e.g. Hendrix’s colossal All Along the Watchtower or Guns n’ Roses’ haunting Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door ) were able to achieve great recognition.
