What made Him completely different was the fact that He set was completely dependence upon the Holy Spirit. “1 John 2:6 tells us that the one who is walking in fellowship is the one who walks like Jesus walked.” Walking is a metaphor for the entire life. Walking in the light (1 John 1:7) is how Jesus walked, (Conditions for Fellowship, n.d.:n.p.) . Another condition for abiding and walking in fellowship is to be filled with Bible doctrine in our thinking and in our minds. 1 John 2:14 NASB “I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.”, (Conditions for Fellowship, n.d.:n.p.) . We need to spend time in the Scriptures under the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit where we come to truly know God. In 1 John 3:24 we read: “The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.” Throughout the epistle of John there is a emphasis on knowledge of doctrine, (Conditions for Fellowship, n.d.:n.p.) . So relevant to knowledge, is the resisting and confessing of sin, the way to resist sin is to occupy your mind with other things. John gives clarity to the fact that confessing your sin in fellowship with Jesus Christ is necessary for true fellowship, Akin (2001:73) . 3.7. The Tests of fellowship according to 1 John 3:13-24 When we read this passage, we read about the tests of fellowship, of which the first is love, true love in action. John encourages his brothers not just to love by tongue but through actions as well. We love the brothers (13-17), true love like Jesus who laid down His life on the cross for His brothers; we ought to have the same love for one another, Akin (2001:154) . 6

John goes on to say that if and when the world hates you, it is to be expected as evil hates righteousness (13-15). We all have passed out of death into life (16- 17), Akin (2001:154) . The second test is to live in confidence before God (21-23), for we receive from Him whatever we ask because we keep His commands, and do the things that please Him (22), John affirms that a believer can come with confidence when God is approached in prayer. Important to note that John has two primary points, we will know we are of the truth and also we will be able to reassure our hearts whenever we feel condemned. Even when our heart/conscience condemns us, God knows the truth of what our heart really is like (20), Akin (2001:154) . Finally we must test the spirits, for we have the Holy Spirit (24) within us, God abides in you for you obey His commandments, thus you are experiencing fellowship with Him. John gives all of the readers the command to discern the spirits. The way in which each believer can fulfil this commandment is through the Holy Spirit living within them. John mentions that the Holy Spirit opens doors for discerning spirits, in John 4:1-6 he speaks about the Holy Spirit that speaks through us as it is the Spirit of truth , Akin (2001:154) .
