Burns (2010) is keen to note that initially, his parents did not support him due to their views and perceptions of homosexuality. As a result, he felt alone and in fact, had begun to sink into depression. A different critical issue that Burns (2010) addresses is the changes that have taken place in society with regard to acceptance and tolerance of various sexual orientations. The speaker notes how the views of American society are slowly changing with respect to tolerance and acceptance of sexual choices in spite of the issue still being surrounded by controversy. He cites the fact that several legislations have been passed over the last decade to allow and recognize same sex relationships and marriages. He also reveals how decades later, he got married as well as how his own parents and relatives have come to accept him and his husband as part of the family. With respect to society’s acceptance of gay people, it is evident from him being elected for a political office in the state of Texas that Americans are gradually becoming tolerant and accepting of people’s alternative sexual orientations.
