Isolated Systolic Hypertension- A condition most commonly seen in the older adult in which the systolic pressure is greater than 140 mmHg and the diastolic pressure is within normal limits (less than 90). Rebound hypertension- Blood pressure that is controlled with medication and becomes uncontrolled (abnormally high) with the sbrupt discontinuation of medication. DISEASE MSMIE- Essential hypertension usually begins insid- iously as a benign disease, slowly progressing to a malignant state. If left untreated even mild cases can lead to major complications and death. Secondary hypertension is r/t an underlying disease, with the most com- mon cause being chronic renal disease. As well as; Cushing’s syndrome. RISK FACTORS ; family history of hypertension, race (more common in blacks), gender (more common in men), DM, stress, obesity, high dietary intake of saturated fats or sodium, tobacco use, hormonal contraceptive use, sedentary lifestyle, aging. B&S- Blood pressure is the product of cardiac output × peripheral resis- tance. Many causes of hypertension have been suggested including: Increased SNS activity r/t dysfunction of ANS. Increased renal absorption of sodium, chloride, and water r/t a genetic variation in the pathways by which the kidneys han- dle sodium.
