Integrative learning helps connect pieces ofundergraduate learning. It can take classroomexperiences, link them with practicalexperiences, and provide an opportunity towork on soft skills. BSIS Day provided a venuefor that kind of growth. Students had toformulate their topics that linked curriculum, experiences, and research. They were able towork on important soft skills likecommunication by writing an abstract, creating a poster, and presenting their work. They also had to delve deeper into thecurriculum for their poster presentations andmake connections between their experiencesand course work. The skills acquired by theparticipantsareconsideredfavorableregardless of the discipline or major. Definingresearch broadly and focusing on major-specific issues allows events like this to bereplicated across campuses and curricula. Thelogistics and planning are similar, while thecontent of the posters make each research dayunique.
How do educators mitigate the risksinvolved in planning such experiences? Whatare some of the planning details andconsiderations needed for a successful event?
