According to the autonomy principle, patients should be allowed to choose what they feel is right for them and what the health care provider thinks is right. The principle has been challenged on several occasions because health professionals are the ones who know what best suits the patients; therefore, when patients are left to make decisions, the health outcome may not be favorable.
