James II - James II and VII was King of England and Ireland as James II and King of Scotland as James VII, from 6 February 1685 until he was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The last Roman Catholic monarch of England, Scotland and Ireland, his reign is now remembered primarily for struggles over religious tolerance. Jamestown – (James Fort) the first settlement by the Virginia Company John Locke - an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism" (life, liberty, pursuit of property) John Newton - an English Anglican clergyman and abolitionist who was forced to served as a sailor in the Royal Navy for a period. He was first a slave of Princess Peye, a black princess of the Sherbro people and then, years after, He became the captain of slave ships. Wrote Amazing Grace John Ratcliffe - captain of the Discovery, one of three ships that sailed from England on 19 December 1606 to Virginia to found a colony, arriving 26 April 1607. He later became the second president of the colony which later became Jamestown. John Rolfe - one of the early English settlers of North America. He is credited with the first successful cultivation of tobacco as an export crop in the Colony of Virginia. Married Pocahotness. John Sassamon - John Sassamon also known as Wussausmon, was born c.1620. He became a Christian convert, a praying Indian who helped serve as an interpreter to the colonists. In January 1675, Sassamon was ambushed and assassinated. A mixed jury of colonists and Indian elders convicted and executed three Wampanoag men for his murder. John Winthrop – The first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, Winthrop envisioned a community that would be a “city upon a hill” Joint-stock Companies – businesses owned by investors, who purchase shares of stock and share the profits and losses King James I - it was the first time England and Scotland had the same monarch. Fought with Parliament, sponsored the Authorized King James Version of the Bible King Phillip’s War – (1675-1678) A war in New England resulting from the escalation of tensions between Native Americans and English settlers; the defeat of the Native American let to broadened freedoms for the settlers and their dispossessing the region’s Native Americans of most of their land Land grant - A land grant is a gift of real estate – land or its use privileges – made by a government or other authority as an incentive, means of enabling works, or as a reward for services to an individual, especially in return for military service
