Often times, as youth mentors and parents, we focus on other things like academics, high- paying careers, etc. Most adults do not focus on this because they want to make sure we are successful. But, that isn’t what it means to be a thriving human. It is important that as youth mentors that our efforts go to both. If your child doesn’t have a spark and isn’t truly thriving, then what is the point of being successful but having no drive or passion? Therefore, it is so important that we do our best to pull the spark out of youths and focusing on the present instead of the future. I did not know the term spark before this and after learning about its importance, I strive to keep this a priority for my children or any youth I will work with in the future.

The second major takeaway I got from this course was the quote from week six’s lecture. The quote is: “Life is best understood backwards but lived forwards.” I think this quote is so important to understand all aspects of youth development, especially in risk management. As mentors, it is very hard to achieve perfection and things change from day to day with adolescents. However, we cannot predict the future and sometimes we have to live through
