Poverty Indications Do you see any signs of homelessness? Street people? Describe gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed . No signs of homelessness in this area. There is a rescue mission on the other side of town, and that is where most tend to congregate. The homeless people that can be seen in this area are usually a mix of Caucasian or African-American males. Many have mental health issues also. Services in the Community Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area, how far away it is and how people will access it. Social Services Do you see evidence of recreation centers, parks, and social services? For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services ? Describe each . There are some rec centers within the community. The Boys and Girls club is a big supporter of helping keep kids off the street and providing a safe place. The YMCA has after school programs for at risk kids to come in and do home work, play basketball, and be active. The YMCA has a room with all new donated iMAC computers where kids from the community that cant afford one can come and do homework, socialize and offers healthy snack options at a reduced price. This is supported by the three hospitals in the area. There is Rosecrance that provides mental health 7

services and drug counseling along with drug detoxing. This is the area that people get sent to if they live in southern IL, or east Iowa that offers these services before you reach Chicago. The park district offers an array of options. The run the local water park called Magic Waters that is open all summer. The have two ice rinks that provide hockey lessons and figure skating lessons to all ages. They have indoor play centers, and also offer karate. They also run most of the parks and offer football, golf and run multiple summer camps for kids. They give a 75% discount to families that receive food stamps and government assistance. This allows kids to be active and keeps them off the street and away from negative influences. The only service not provided in the area is long term psychiatric care. Two hospitals have acute psychiatric units, but no long term places, they must go to Chicago for those. ● Health Services Do you see evidence of health (Hospitals, Dr’s Offices, Clinics) and mental health services? Describe each . Are there any signs of alternative services in the area, such as healers (curanderos), herbalists, herbal stores, palm readers, acupunctures, chiropractors. For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services ? The area is full of health care services. There are 3 hospitals in the city, and 2 of them are Level 1 trauma centers. All three operate multiple clinics that provide everything from specialty care to primary care. They are building a new billiion dollar hospital that opens in 2019. The clinics are locate through out the area in different cities also. You can receive healthcare without having to drive more than 5 minutes in any direction.
