Explain the ad’s subtexts, or underlying messages, and how they are constructed by the ad’s images and/or written text. The primary subtext of this ad is that a teenage boys sexual fantasy can be fulfilled by using this product. It implies that if he uses their product girls will find him irresistible, and they will fulfill whatever desires he has. This is displayed by their pulling at him as he tries to escape, the text on the card about his buddy finding the situation hilarious, and the footnote that says “designed to attract the ladies.” What effects might the ad have on the way people of different genders view themselves or each other? The ad may cause boys to think that they can only obtain the attention of girls by using this product, rather than simply being themselves. It also reinforces the negative stereotype that girls and women are simply sexual objects for men’s pleasure and only valuable for their physical appearance. Under the Influence Advertisement Analysis Worksheet Your Advertisement: Wash Describe the content of your ad in detail, including the following components: setting, people, objects, actions, and printed words. The background image is of a laundry room with a washer and dryer, coat hangers, laundry baskets and a bottle of laundry detergent. There are three people in the picture. In the center is an Asian man, in his early thirties. He is wearing a plain, dark blue apron. On his right is a young boy of mixed race, specifically Asian and African American. The young boy is also wearing a plain apron. Both are facing the man’s left where there is an African American woman in a wheelchair. She is wearing jeans and a white T-shirt. She has grease on her face, her hands, her shirts and jeans. In her lap is a large wrench also covered in grease. Her hands are upturned and a placating manner and she has a sheepish grin on her face. At the top of the image is text that states “Get your clothes REALLY clean with Washwell Laundry Detergent.” Who is the audience for your ad? How did you try to appeal to them? The audience for my ad is anyone who has to do laundry. I used non- traditional roles by having a man and young boy doing the laundry. I also used multiple, non-white ethnicities.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
