wide variety of industries, including energy, technology, retail, manufacturing, financial services, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. GETTING HIRED Vault’s Verdict: The key to securing an offer at Littler? A strong background—or at least demonstrated interest—in labor and employment law. The firm typically hires attorneys with experience but will take on an occasional recent graduate. Hiring Process • “Littler looks for the very best, but also for the right kind of person. If you excelled in law school but are not personable or social, then Littler isn’t the right place. The people here are full of integrity and down to earth, in addition to being brilliant and hard workers.” • “Firm only hires experienced employment attorneys. Few people currently fit this profile; market seems hot for appli- cants right now.” • “Our office almost never hires straight from law school. For those looking to lateral, there are definite opportunities. A strong interest in labor and employment is a must.” Interview Questions • “We ask questions that get to the essence of the person—the person’s work ethic, independence level, intelligence, etc. It helps to have a connection to someone already in the firm.” • “We ask questions to understand the candidates work experience and how they will get along in the office.” • “Do you plan on staying in San Diego for the long-term? The firm wants to be sure the candidate isn’t here to surf in Del Mar for a few years, only to ditch San Diego and move back to the east coast. They value longevity and commitment. If you plan on leaving San Diego after a few years, don’t even bother applying.” • “’What keeps you up at night?’ ‘Did you ever go to court?’ ‘Why this firm?’” Lateral Integration • “I just hit the ground running, not much integration.” • “The firm has an effective orientation process, and an excellent in-person training program for all new associates (including laterals).” • “After almost three years of experience litigating, I was brought in as a level one associate.”
