In the hopes to improve patient safety when it comes to non-urgent patient requests for prescriptions, I would meet with all the providers and office manager and suggest we implement a new policy addressing non-urgent request for medication. The policy would include the following, non-licensed employees will not be allowed to call in prescriptions without having discussed it with the provider first. It would also be my recommendation that when at all possible the practice always schedules an appointment for patients calling requesting medications. At a minimum arranging for the provider to at least speak with the patient over the phone before calling in a prescription. According to Asinas, Leonardo, Aldana, Reboton, and Libunao (2016), current data suggests thousands of people are suffering from complications following medical errors and hospital inaccuracies each year despite having well-qualified medical professionals tending to their conditions. Additionally, lack of solidarity and teamwork was cited, which resulted in disorganized work processes and protocols as well as inconsistencies in healthcare practices and delivery. Implementing a new practice protocol will not only ensure the safety of the patients but will also help in reducing the liability for the providers. Everyone in the office will be on the same page and know exactly what their role is and what is expected of them in this particular situation.
