and Della speak to the three wise men, by giving each other the gift of love, despite the fact that
their presents have no utilization any more.
Explain how the elements/techniques illustrate the theme and conflict expressed in the story.
The literacy elements illustrate the conflict and the theme in the store by showing the reference of
the three wise men, to be able to give the gifts to each other even though Jim and Della are poor.
The story shows that Jim and Della may be poor but they are rich in love.

Week 2 - Discussion 2
The Gift of the Magi
Della
Why did this character interest you? What choices does the character make, and how do the
choices (or the result of the choices) contribute to the theme of the story?
I was most interested by Della’s willingness to sacrifice for her love. Della’s love for her husband is
so powerful that she would choose to lose her most treasured possession, her long hair, just to get a
gift she felt her husband deserved.
