kept at just above room temperature with a relative humidity of about 80-90%. Rapid conditioning in footwear manufacture. This is subjecting the upper leathers that are prone to grain cracking to a fast conditioning.Uppers are spaced out on rods fitted in the cabinet. A rapid stream of hot water vapour at 50 is blown over the uppers in a cycle time of 15-30 minutes. The uppers should be lasted as soon as possible after being taken from the cabinet. This is because the moisture taken will dry quickly evaporates off into the warm atmosphere. LASTING Lasting is the term applied to the processes that involve the stretching the upper material over the last mould and securing it to the bottom of the Insole either with tacks or adhesive. Providing that the operations are carried out in the correct way, the upper will conform itself to the contours of the last and, when the last is removed, it retain this shape. The areas of the last which present the greatest difficulties in lasting are those in which major shape changes occur. To achieve shape retention it is essential to apply strains at certain major points. This is illustrated by the diagram below showing these major straining points and direction of each strain. These direction of strains are known as “ drafting lines”.
