Internal Data Design History Many applications will require an accurate history to be maintained of past transactions and records. Prices Dates Quantity values DB Design must support this. How? Keeping fields which at first glance may appear to violate 3NF: for instance, price in a order detail record Using History tables Using Versioning of records

Internal Data Design Security/Privacy Certain data fields may contain sensitive information, such as IDs, SSN, CC numbers, … Data in these fields may need to be stored in encrypted format. This insures that if someone gets hold of the DBMS data files themselves, they cannot simply bypass the DBMS security and access sensitive data directly. Alternatively, the entire database may be stored in encrypted format

External Data Design Process of designing external interfaces for the database. Used by applications. Need not be (and often is not) the same as the physical data design. may join related tables to look like one table or object to an outside application may limit what columns and records of data are accessible and what privileges are granted (read, add, update, delete) may perform transformations of data may perform audit functions may pull together data from disparate systems External interfaces are used by developers building information systems application logic.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
