Chapters two, three, and four present in detail each of the three theories of rhetoric. I. A. Richards, from a linguistic background, points up problems of meaning. Kenneth Burke makes social and psychoanalytic extensions of aristotelian theory. And the gen- eral semanticists, represented chiefly by S. I. Hayakawa and Irving Lee, work from the korzybskian principle that sanity today hinges upon a revision of yesterday's outmoded aristote- lian terminology. Finally, in chapter five, Father Fogarty draws together all the elements in the three philosophies of rhetoric that could be useful to teachers and students, pointing ways to make the necessary adaptations from abstract theory to concrete practice.
