Many adolescents report experiencing sexual coercion from a peer, and the risk for future experiences rises dramatically after the first incident (Young,2013). Adolescents may respond in different ways, however, those who have experienced sexual coercion will respond externalizing behavior in hopes to get attention or help coping with the incident that happened. Sexual behavior also becomes an issue for those victims of sexual coercion, developing traumatic sexualization, a process in which survivors “develop inappropriate and interpersonally dysfunctional attitudes toward sexuality as a result of the abuse (Young,2013)”. Leading to dangerous promiscuous sexual behavior in hopes to mask the emotions they are feeling internally. These findings have shown that sexual coercion intensifies factors that do contribute to coercion risk. Many people fall into external fixes to unconsciously protect themselves from feeling the internal turmoil they are suffering. Suicidal ideation has a connection with depression and other mood disorders. Suicidal ideation is when a person desires death but has no plan in carrying through with it. There was an international dating study that was done regarding sexual coercion and the connection with suicidal ideation among university student. There were 16.000 students selected through convenience sampling. The results shown that dating violence were high. An male and female students were remarkably similar when it comes to sexual coercion. Correlation analysis revealed that perpetrators and victims of sexual coercion had an increase rate of suicidal ideation
9(Lamis,2016). Suicidal thoughts can be overpowering to those individuals who have been involved in sexual coercion. Leaving them feeling unworthy, an uncomfortable within their own skin. AN the only way to escape it is through wanting to commit suicide, however, not fully going through with it, although some may make attempts. Suicide is a critical problem, which has a huge impact on many of victims who have experienced sexual coercion. Although they may not fully go through with suicide, the mental and emotional anguish they carry with them can sooner then later take a toll developing major depression.
