Emerging factors that began changing American’s view toward nature. How America used nature to form a national identity—nationalism. I strongly disagree with the statement, “America could have developed its national identity without its natural landscapes.” I believe that America’s national identity is influenced greatly because of its national landscapes. America’s landscapes are what make up they nation itself because they represent the values America was founded upon. Native Americans thrived in the wilderness years ago, yet when the world changed and westward expansion was on the rise, “westward expansion of civilization was thought good, wilderness was bad” (Nash, 2014, p. 40). Instead of referring to the wilderness in a negative manner, people - especially Americans - should be embracing it. The fact that Native Americans lived in the wilderness for centuries displays immense independence: an imperative American value. The wilderness is a representation of values specifically independence because of how the Native Americans lived for years off of practically nothing; this value is vital to modern day American society because of how people work to achieve the American dream and create a better life for themselves, yet none of these values would’ve been instilled without our national landscapes. American landmarks are directly linked to American culture and thus would be nothing without those landmarks reminding us of the values associated with them. America would be nothing without our landscapes reminding us of our values and who we are as a

country. It was documented that some travelers when crossing the continent came to realize that “Nationalism was not enough. Scenery must be preserved.” (Runte, 2010, p. 27). Scenery has to be preserved to be a reminder of values. For instance, if there was no wilderness or reservations than people wouldn’t be reminded of Native Americans and the independence that is directly correlated with the wilderness landscape.
