under white-minority rule and institutionalized racial segregation. Nelson Mandela directed a peaceful, non-violent campaign in defiance against the South African government. In 1962, he was incarcerated for 27 years for political offenses like trying tooverthrow the government. In 1993, he negotiated with the South African President F.W.de Klerk and together ended apartheid. They won a noble prize award in 1993 for all of their efforts. The characteristics that made Nelson a great leader were passion, hope, intelligence and determination. He knew this was a cause worth fighting for and remained passionate throughout the fight to end apartheid. He gave people hope and still had a strong influence even when he was in prison. He was known for his great humor and used his smile as a way to resolve any tension. He believed that smiling wasmore powerful than hatred and opposition. Lastly, he was determined to create a better
future by replacing apartheid with another system that allowed South Africans to be free and he managed to successfully do so.
