F) in order to thrive and develop into reefs.
The largest coral reef is located in Australia. Other coral reefs are located along the
equator in other tropical oceans.
SHOW ME THE REEF!

REEF HEALTH
Unfortunately, because these reefs have such specific needs, coral reefs around the
world are dying as a result of destructive human activity.
In a recent study of the correlation between pollution levels and the rate of which
microbes erode reefs showed that “the level of pollution in the reef and … the rate at
which the corals broke down … was directly related to the amount of pollution”
(Adhiambo, 2012)

STOP THE EROSION
If something doesn’t happen soon to stop the pollution, over-fishing, and urbanization,
future generations won’t have the option to go visit the great Barrier Reef and marvel at
its wonders. “The latest reports state that … as much as 32 percent [of coral reefs] are at
risk of being lost within the next 32 years.” (Whier, 2001)
Unfortunately, this reality is only too real as according to the same study, 27% of
monitored reefs has
already
eroded.

In order to slow deterioration of coral reefs, there are two main factors that must be
addressed-there needs to be less pollution and less run-off into the oceans.
