Exams (20% each) There are two exams. The exams will cover material from lectures, readings, and audio/video examples. They may or may not include a mix of multiple choice, short answer, and short essay questions. There will be no review sheets given –all objectives will be covered in class that should be used to help aid in studying. During office hours you may review exams after receiving your score, however this must be done one week after grades have been posted. Class Participation (10%) Attendance and participation in class are very important in this course. You may be called upon in class to answer questions or contribute to discussions and you will participate regularly in small group activities. You will earn full points (10% of your final grade) for participation if you have three or less unexcused absences. Please email
me before class (except in case of medical emergency) to request an excused absence. After three unexcused absences, 1% will be deducted from your overall grade for each day absent (up to 10%).Research Participation (5%) PSYC 221 students are required to participate in 2.5 hours of research studies conducted by researchers in the Department of Psychology. Each half hour will be worth 1.0%. The Psychology department uses an online system called Sona to manage research participation (). This website is where you will go to find research participation opportunities and to track the amount of credit you’ve earned. If you have already created a Sona account, your account should still be active and you can simply log back in. If you’ve never used Sona before, you will have to create a new for yourself. This is done by clicking on a link on the left-hand side of the site’s login home page (“New Participant? Request an account here”). On Sona, 1 point is earned for completing 1 hour of research participation (0.5 points for 30 minutes, etc.); in other words, you will need to earn 2.5 points / hours in order to get full credit (5% of your final grade in this course). Students must be 18 years old to participate in the research studies. Students may not earn extra credit if they complete more than the required research participation. Research participation needs to be completed by the last day of class. As an alternative to research participation, students may opt to read a peer-reviewed journal article, first approved by the instructor, and then summarized in your own words (2 pages double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1” margins,). The journal “Psychological Science” is one acceptable journal source. Each typed summary is worth +1% (equivalent to 30 minutes of research participation); thus students are required to complete five summaries if they choose to not participant in any research studies. Both the typed summary and research article need to be submitted before the last day of classes. Papers will be checked for plagiarism using IIT’s SafeAssign / TurnItIn software. .
