What was behind Taewon’gun’s isolation policy and how did it influence Choson politics? -witnessed Qing China’s aftermath through the first and second opium war, withheld a strong isolation policy. -the incident of the General Sherman, US trading ship: attempted to rifle the tomb of taewon gun’s father -the 2 foreign disturbances in 1866 and 1871 - he also feared the spread of Catholicism aka France because Russia was also trying to advance with France’s help = persecution of Catholic priests 1b. Did he have no choice but to keep an isolation policy in order to save Choson from threats of foreign powers ? 1c. The government asked Qing China to bring in troops to suppress the peasant rebellion..) -Both fought for social equality against class distinction & government corruption -However, progressive party strive for western technology, tonghak opposed western culture
