-OPEC...loosens western control over oil economy and by 1980s most countries have nationalized -Realizing Mossadeq is not backing down...Brits decide to wait it out, thinking there is no way he will maintain support -US loves to use “national characteristics” to explain reason for failure of negotiations 104 -Still a narrative today that Britain and US were kind and willing to come to table but Iran and Mossadeq wouldn’t budge (ungrateful, unwilling) -In negotiations Britain is mad because 1933 deal is being unilaterally broken (in world court post WWI and post League of Nations) and it says you have to revise not cancel and they are mad because they want concessions for the profits that would arise over the next 42 years of the contract -Iran says it is none of world court’s business because it is a problem between state and company, not two states -Also say 1933 deal isn’t legal because it was negotiated by dictator and company had broken rules/promises too 9/19 Keddie Chapter 6 -US influence really begins in WWII and that is where Reza Shah stops progressing and starts facing more problems -Shah’s sympathy toward Germans is big problem, especially when they invade Iran in 1941 -British and Russians send a note to Iran and are like this is a problem and when Shah hesitates, they remove him in August 1941 -Won’t remove German officers -His son takes over and does not bypass constitutional government...a lot of pre-Reza politicians -Becomes more corrupt (landowning a-holes in Majles only for themselves and civil servants paid so poorly they had to take bribes) -Tudeh party emerges in 1941 and by 1942 there are unions, revival of free press -Millspaugh comes back and is basically in charge of finances 42-43...increases US influence a lot -Progressive income tax 1943 -British bring Sayyed Zia ad-Din back and he becomes main opposition to Tudeh....Advocates for return to Islamic customs, abolition of Shah’s reforms with right wing National Will Party -In between is nationalist party of Mossadeq -Post WWI as post WWII most radical movements are in north and encouraged by Russians
-Qavam becomes premier (he is prime minister before Reza) and grants a lot of the demands of the left and of Azerbaijanis and Kurds (who are mad and who Russia is preventing Iran from stopping) -The fact that they even pass in landlord controlled government shows degree of demand for change…(right wing resurgence keeps from being effective) -Shit just goes more to shit...poor people are being shat upon by middlemen who are making money from scarcity, terrible health outcomes, people without land -Inflation levels off at 1944 then gets bad again 1947 -Intellectual unemployment 9/21 Class Notes -Reza will not remove German officers and shit -Also apparently by declaring war on Germany they get chance to get into UN -Why allies invade Iran?
