- Kick like a girl, walk like a girl etc. Intersex: - Umbrella term: used to describe people who have sex characteristics that are not exclusively male or female> Formerly known as hermaphrodites. 1 in 1500 in NA Sex Chromosome Variations - Turners Syndrome (XO) o Affects 1 in 2500 females o Missing Second X Chromosome o Most common sign are short, webbed necks, lowered ears etc. o Profound short stature and infertility o Other features include: puffy hands and fingers, a skin fold on the neck o All TS patients require estrogen to promote breast growth o Early diagnosis is essential to promote growth and stop congenital heart defects - Klinefelter’s Syndrome (XXY) o Male have two or more X chromosomes o Affects 1 in 500 to 1000 males o Often undiagnosed until puberty o Males with Klinefelter’s may show breast development, small testes, shorter than average penises, low testosterone o Many will not identify as male and may opt for surgery. o Can be treated with testosterone treatment. - Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia o First known hormonal disorder that affects the development of sex characteristics and can be found in both chromosomal males and females. o CAH individuals are exposed before birth to high levels of androgens produced by the adrenal glands. Causing them to not produce corticosteroids. o Cause varying degrees of virilisation in female genital o Conditions may be diagnosed at puberty o CAH girls and boys may exhibit different behaviours - Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome o AIS Individuals have an XY karyotype but develop a female phenotype o Can cause inhibition of the male genitalia and secondary sex characteristics.
