Design School Culture versus the Business School Culture Compared to the design schools, management education is imparted in a quasi- corporate formal environment. The focus is to give the student a good insight into the Approaches to Design and Management in India 121 way companies function and accomplish goals. The students are exposed to the various functions of management planning, organizing, leading, coordinating, controlling, staffing and motivating through an analytical and case-study-based approach. New Pedagogy Acknowledging that design and management education emanates from very different cultures, it is important to adopt new pedagogical methods for the subjects that are a blend of business and design methods that encourage learning a new approach to management. In Richard Klimonsky s (2007) words, What comes through clearly is that learningby- doing is not only common to the human condition, but also that we as management educators would benefit greatly if we better understood the processes involved and adapted them to our teaching efforts. were to develop the capacity to efficiently learn from experience and also were to find ways to internalize the powerful benefits of seeking out experiences from which to learn, we would have produced individuals with the potential to be life-long learners. Thus practice-based experience, if transformed using a practice epistemology into new knowledge, could be used to complement what we teach in our classrooms. It is generally agreed that most blended subjects should be introduced to students in this format. Any learning that happens by asking questions that come from live experiences is real knowledge creation, otherwise it is mere information dissemination from teacher to student. When students encounter issues and try to find solutions, they understand the practical implications of theoretical models and constructs. In the programme, therefore, conventional management subjects are given a new format so that they are taught in a team-teaching mode, with professors coming from different management functions. The presence of a design professor in the team brings a radical perspective to the topic being discussed and enthuses the session with more energy and a different line of thought. Integrated Projects For the business design program, integrated project-based learning is used to give a holistic view of business. The biggest advantage of project-based learning is the development of the skill of defining the problem first and then thinking of breakthrough solutions. This paves the way for innovation whether in products, processes, services or environment as a whole.
