The first term on the right of equation (1.9) is the equal to the average power trans- ferred to the 2-terminal element and is called the Active power, usually denoted by the symbol P . The second term on the right is termed as the Reactive power, denoted by the symbol Q . So, S = V I = P + jQ. (1.10) Active power is the average rate at which energy is fed unidirectionally into the 2- terminal element or sub-circuit. Reactive power on the other hand is the average rate at which energy is continuously tossed into and out of the 2-terminal element or sub-circuit. The corresponding component of energy does not do any net work, hence reactive power was sometimes called “wattless power”. You may not trust this statement right away! So, can you try (dis)proving it? Complex power of a passive resitor has no reactive power component and is entirely comprised of active power. But the complex power of an inductor or capacitor is entirely reactive and has no active power component. This is because the current
