At the end of 24 hrs remove the cube from the mould and immediately submerge in fresh clean water. The cube shall be taken out of the water only at the time of testing. 6) Take the cube out of water at the end of three days with dry cloth. Measure the dimensions of the surface (A) in which the load is to be applied. Let be ‘L’ and ‘B’ respectively.

7) Place the cube in compressive testing machine and apply the load uniformly. Note the load at which the cube fails. Let it be ‘P’. Therefore comp. strength f=P/A (N/mm2). Objective : Determination of specific gravity and water absorption of coarse aggregate. Apparatus : The apparatus consists of the following: (1) A balance of capacity about 3kg. (2) A thermostatically controlled oven. (3) A wire basket. (4) A container for filling water and suspending the basket (5) A shallow tray and two absorbent clothes, each not less than 75x45cm. Materials used: (1) Coarse aggregate. Theory: Apparent Specific Gravity: The volume measurement only includes the volume of the aggregate particle; it does not include the volume of any water permeable voids. The mass measurement only includes the aggregate particle. Apparent specific gravity is intended to only measure the specific gravity of the solid volume.
