Current approach to immigration policy area Skilled Migration – Skilled and family migrant visas brought people especially from Asia Humanitarian Programs – Brought refugees and asylum seekers from many places (processed off shore) 2017 - Stricter requirements to ensure businesses address skill shortages by prioritising Australian workers over overseas workers – e.g the replacement of Visa 457 with 2 new visas to address issue International Student Visas – Bring international students from all over theworld How asylum seekers are currently processed by our Government An asylum seeker is a person who has applied for protection as a refugee but whose claims have not yet been processed. Most refugees have sought asylum at some point. At this stage there are no time limits for how long people can be held in detention for processing. This means that some people are living in detention centres for many years. There has been considerable concern for the mental health and wellbeing of the individuals and families who are kept in detention (Triggs, 2013). The conditions within the centres vary dramatically and most of the detention centres are located in remote locations. Few people are allowed to visit the centres so it can be difficult to ascertain what the conditions are really like. The Pacific Solution was ended in 2008 but a similar policy was drafted in 2012 . it was the the title given to the Australian policy of transferring asylum seekers to detention centres on island nations, rather than allowing them to land on the Australian mainland Current debates and social issues stemming from the way that Australia approaches those wishing to live here In February, 2017, many detainees still remain on Manus Island awaiting to hear final decisions in regards to their futures. There are concerns amongst the detainees that they will be deported back to their countries of origin - the countries from which they fled (ABC, 2017). This is a current political issue that is ever changing. However, it is important to note this remains a significant human rights issue and this focus should not be lost within the political rhetoric. Inherent tensions in this policy area The mental health impacts of those held in the centres was significant The lengthy periods of time that many asylum seekers spent on the islands while their claims were being processed Lack of adequate water, sanitation and electricity Asylum seekers were housed under harsh conditions Lack of access to legal advice for the detainees The instances of persons engaging in hunger strikes and self-harm (Parliament of Australia, 2012).
