Group management reportAdditional key performance indicators88MAHLEGroupAnnual Report 2019In North America, our employees numbered a total of 16,136as at the end of 2019 and thus 954 (–5.6 percent) fewer than inthe previous year. To offset decreasing orders through improve-ments in efficiency, we reduced our headcount in Mexico by753 employees.Compared with the previous year, our staffing level in SouthAmerica fell by 7.5 percent to 8,391. The reduction of a total of683 employees is likewise attributable to declining order volumesand the impact of improvement initiatives.In the Asia/Pacific region, our employees numbered 16,161 as atthe end of the year under review, 536 fewer people (–3.2 per-cent) than in the previous year. In Asia too, the reduction instaffing levels was associated with declining sales and optimi-zation measures—primarily in China.In Africa, we employed 991 staff as at the reference date,57 people fewer in total than in the previous year (–5.5 percent).Headcount by business segmentIn our Engine Systems and Components business unit, thestaffing level decreased by 1,630 employees. At 34.4 percent,the majority of our group’s employees still worked at one of the43 locations belonging to this business unit. We employedaround 30 percent of our total workforce at the 37 locations ofthe Thermal Management business unit. In comparison with theprevious year, we numbered 1,024 fewer employees in this area.Around 13.6 percent of the group’s workforce worked in theFiltration and Engine Peripherals business unit’s 36 plants,516 employees or 4.7 percent fewer than in 2018. Adjusted forthe reorganization of the pumps business into a separate profitcenter, the decline was 2.6 percent.
