in the forward part of the frontal lobes enables judgment, planning, and processing of new memories Damage to this part of the brain can alter personality Our mental experiences arise from coordinated brain activity The brain's plasticity brains are sculpted by both our Gene's and our experiences a. A pianist will have a larger auditory cortex Plasticity - the brain's ability to change, especially during childhood, by reorganizing after dmg or by building new pathways based on experience The effects of brain dmg can be traced to 2 hard facts: 1. Severed neurons do not regenerate 2. Some brain functions seem preassigned to specific areas Sometimes the brain will create new neurons instead of reorganizing existing neurons Neurogenesis - the formation of new neurons Module 13: Brain Hemisphere Organization and the Biology of Consciousness Our Divided Brain The brains left and right hemispheres serve different functions Splitting the Brain Corpus callosum - the large band of neural fibers connecting the two brain hemispheres and carrying messages between them When the corpus callosum was cut the seizures of patients disappeared Split brains - a condition resulting from surgery that isolates the brain’s 2 hemispheres by cutting the fibers connecting them Split brain surgery leaves people with two separate minds Left controls speech and vision and the right controls the left hand

Right-Left Differences in the Intact Brain When a person performs a perceptual task there is increased activity in the right hemisphere When a person speaks or calculates there is activity in the left hemisphere The right hemisphere: Excels in making inferences Helps us modulate our speech to make meaning clear Helps orchestrate our sense of self We have unified brains with specialized parts (if your corpus callosum isn’t cut The Biology of Consciousness Consciousness - our awareness of ourselves and our environment Consciousness promotes our survival by anticipating how we seem to others and helping us read their minds Cognitive Neuroscience Cognitive neuroscience - the interdisciplinary study of the brain activity linked with cognition A “vegetative” person and a healthy patient have the same brain activity in the brain area When you think or do something a specific part of the brain will light up Dual Processing: The two-track mind We have two minds each supported by its own neural equipment When we look at a bird we think of the bird which is a result of cognitive processing but not our subprocessing like the color, form, and movement Dual Processing - the principle that info is often simultaneously processed on separate conscious and unconscious tracks Vision is split into two things seeing consciously and blindsight where the patient can still see Before you make a conscious movement your brain makes the decision 0.2 seconds before you actually make it Running an automatic pilot allows our consciousness to monitor deal with new challenges

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
