Interesting- said after Gatsby already is dead Gatsby’s father- page 168- “his grief began to be mixed with an awed pride” o Father was unsuccessful o Family wasn’t aristocracy- yet Fitzgerald always dreamed of being  ‘better’ o Significance of bringing Gatsby’s father into the picture? o Approval? Proved he could be successful? Or Mocking his real life? Pg 173- “General Resolves” o Showed Gatsby’s ambition from an early age (auto-biographical-  Fitzgerald also wanted to be rich and famous and something more  than his father) o In the end, Gatsby ends up dead- depressing way for Fitzgerald to  recognize that his own ambition was not enough to pull him through his own life o Religion lens- Fitzgerald commenting on the importance of Christianity (in his case,  Catholicism) or the absurdity of religion? (Question for the class) Pg 157-160 o Church at a time like this- 157 o
