Staff officers are arranged with the adjutant on the right and the S-2, S-3, and S-4 to the left, but the commander may arrange them in any order. Enlisted personnel forming with the staff ordinarily are posted by seniority of grade from right to left. When enlisted personnel conduct a parade or ceremony, the staff will consist only of
enlisted. All commands for the staff are preceded by the word "Staff" and will only be given loud enough for the staff to hear to prevent the formation from prematurely executing a command. To form the staff for a parade or other ceremony, the commander moves to a position in front of and centered on the reviewing stand, halts facing the reviewing stand, and commands "Staff, FALL IN." • The staff members move from the left and right of the reviewing stand into a position centered on and facing the commander. • The staff will not raise their arms or turn their heads to gain alignment. • If armed with swords, they remain in the scabbard. Once the staff is in position, the commander executes an about face and commands "Staff, Forward, MARCH." • Staff members march forward with the commander to their position midway between the reviewing area and the line of troops. The staff will not draw sword until after the adjutant has formed the parade and returned to his/her post in the staffThe staff marches two paces to the rear of the commander in two ranks. The staff only marches in column when boxing the staff and when moving to allow colorsto pass. For all other direction changes, the staff will make turning movements similar to the color guard on the command "Staff, Right (Left) Turn, MARCH." The staff will conduct the following four basic movements during parades and ceremonies. In accordance with MCO P1020.34 and MCO P5060.20, the wearing of swords during ceremonies while in utility uniform is not authorized.
The staff, if so armed, will draw sword after the adjutant forms the parade and returns to his/her position in the staff. • Once in position, the adjutant will automatically go to order sword. The commander will command "Staff, Draw, SWORD." • The staff executes draw sword and, as a third count, go to order sword without command. • The commander remains at the carry. The staff will present arms with the commander on the commander's separate command to the staff.During parades and other ceremonies, when it is prescribed for the staff to change its position to place itself behind the commander, the commander will order the adjutant to "BOX THE STAFF." The adjutant then gives the following commands. • "Staff, Carry, SWORD" (if so armed) • "Staff, Left, FACE" • "Staff, Column Right, MARCH" -Second column right executed without command.-Once each staff member has reached their new position they automatically mark time.
