is the Internet or a mobile device, society has grown dependent on such devices. This new epidemic is something that industries throughout the world should pay attention to because it canbring them great profit in the long run. The Internet, in particular, has become a mechanism to bring producers and consumers closer together. Since the majority of the population has Internet access, industries, including fast food, have made an effort to use this device in their favor. Beingthat it is very convenient, many companies have gained much success with the help of their online website. When Domino’s Pizza launched their online ordering in late 2007, they saw massive growth in their sales since it allowed customers to order and track their order in the comfort of their own home. After this innovation, “more than one third of pizza sales originate online” and thanks to this growth they want to expand to more customers through mobile apps (Nash, 2013). What Dominoes exactly does is allow customers to submit orders online and then it tracks the creation of their order all the way through delivery. This ultimately will help restaurants attract more customers and have their current customers remain loyal. But another use of the internet is to include promotions and advertisements that are unavoidable and appear as pop-ups; an annoying, yet effective strategy. Another reason why the technological changes going on in today’s world are so important is because they allow fast food companies to make their products at a faster pace. The fast food industry prides itself upon the fact that they provide food for those who are on the go. As a result, customers, especially those in a tight schedule, expect that the fast food restaurants prepare their products in a reasonable amount of time. With the help of emerging technology, fast food companies have been able to prepare their food at faster rates. McDonald’s, for example, has renovated a great number of their restaurants to make it more hi-tech. Employees
Fast Food 13use computer touch-screens to put in orders, beverage dispensers, and the custom-assembled food is “guaranteed to arrive under 3.5 minutes or it is free (Waters, 1997). Many fast food companies are also using computer technology to increase impulse buying. This new software gives the customer the opportunity to buy an item for a discounted price with their spare change. Because of this new software sales have increased by 3% and pretax profits by 30% (Albert, 2005). As one can see, the technological growth in America only brings opportunity to grow for the fast food industry and it is up to them to take advantage of it in order to be successful and stay on top of their game. Economic TrendsEach industry in the world revolves around the economy of the country in which it is in. Like the domino effect, if the economy begins to collapse the businesses that are dependent on it,such as the fast food industry, are prone to fall too. It is up to that individual business to find ways to survive. As we have seen during the recession of 2008, when there is an economic crisis
