had fully opened my eyes, I’d discovered that my grandmother, Nena Mae, had drifted into a deep sleep and hadn’t wakened up from it. Our family was devastated, and my life had forever changed. That day, the world lost a powerful, caring, and selfless woman, and lost another one, in the same manner, in September of 2004 (p. 545). Ida Mae Brandon Gladney and Nena Mae Monroe were two women who knew the value of sacrifice. They knew that in order for their families to have a better life, they would have to dedicate theirs to making sure it was possible. They both contributed nothing but good to the world, and made great impacts on what had become of the future generations of their families. “By their actions, they did not dream the American Dream, they willed it into being by a definition of their own choosing.”
