CUHK(SZ) EIE 3001, Spring 2018/19 What can I do with a system? a Testing: checking a system by the input and output signals , and see if the performance is satisfactory a Analysis: usually involving the study of various signals associated with the system . a System modeling: often involving writing down a mathematical description of the input and output signals , and their relationship. a System redesign: requiring decision on a better system architecture, as well as finding “good” system parameters, etc.

Slide 15 CUHK(SZ) EIE 3001, Spring 2018/19 Switching Between CT and DT a Modern systems often involve interactions between continuous-time physical systems and discrete-time computer systems. We need to understand the linkage between the CT and DT models and be able to switch back-and-forth between them. a Switching between CT and DT involves sampling and interpolation that we will discuss later

Slide 16 CUHK(SZ) EIE 3001, Spring 2018/19 Real-Valued and Complex-Valued Signals a One expects that values of physical signals (acoustic pressure, share price, etc.) should be a real number. But, as we will soon learn, it is far more efficient to model signals mathematically as complex-valued . a Thus, a 1-dimensional signal is a mapping of “time”, which is either a real number (CT) or an integer (DT), to a complex number (the signal value). In this course we deal with deterministic signals which means that at a given time, there is only one possible signal value. This means the mapping is not one-to-many and is a function .
Slide 17 CUHK(SZ) EIE 3001, Spring 2018/19 CT and DT signals as Mapping/Function x [ n ] is also referred as a sequence. Any particular one in x [ n ] is called a sample.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
