Services in the Community Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area, how far away it is and how people will access it. ● Social Services Do you see evidence of recreation centers, parks, and social services? For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services ? Describe each . There are a few recreation centers within five blocks of each other within this area. There is the YMCA of Mission Valley that offers a wide variety of programs and activities for adults, children and their families. The other recreation center is called Tecolote Canyon Rec Center and Athletic field. This recreation center offers a playground, baseball field, basketball court, and tennis court for those that use the facility. During baseball season, the rec center hosts little league baseball. Across from the University of San Diego, there is a small park called Edward Tyler Cramer park. There is a little play structure that has a slide and a few monkey bars. Another park that is well- known is Mission Bay Park. The park is equipped with playground structures for children to enjoy. It is within walking distance from most homes. Social services are not readily available in the area. You must drive about 4465-4-19_
fifteen minutes to the East side of Clairemont Mesa area. For those who do not drive or own a vehicle, there is the public transit system that can be utilized. The Health and Human department and Medicaid offices are within the same building, making it easily accessible. However, other services such as Social Security and WIC (Women, Infant and children) extended further into other communities. It takes about twenty minutes via auto to get to the Social Security office in the city of La Mesa. As for the WIC offices, there are multiple locations in San Diego. The closest one to Mission Valley is in North Park off 30 th and University Ave. These services can be accessed using automobiles or public transportation such as the transit and trolley system. Or one can also utilize Lyft or Uber. ● Health Services Do you see evidence of health (Hospitals, Dr’s Offices, Clinics) and mental health services? Describe each . Are there any signs of alternative services in the area, such as healers (curanderos), herbalists, herbal stores, palm readers, acupunctures, chiropractors? For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services ? Within the survey area of Mission Valley, there is only one dentist, a chiropractor, and hair clinic observed. No medical office building is present. One must drive to nearby neighborhoods such as Hillcrest or Linda Vista area to access doctor’s offices. These two neighborhoods are within five minutes of each other and can be accessed by public transportation. Other alternative services are not seen in this area. For services such as herbalists, palm readers, acupuncture and chiropractors, they can be found nearby in Old Town. Old Town is less than five minutes from Mission Valley. People can 4465-4-19_
either walk, drive or use public transportation.
