4 9.5 Dilution of Solutions Dilution is a process of adding more solvent to a concentrated solution to obtain a diluted solution. As a result, the volume of the solution increases, and its concentration decreases. But the amount of solute remains the same. The equation is C 1 V 1 =C 2 V 2 , C 1 and C 2 represent initial and final concentrations, respectively; V 1 and V 2 represent the initial and final volumes of the solution, respectively. The volume of the juice is increased from 1 can to 4 cans, V 2 = 4V 1, a four-fold dilution. Thus, the concentration is decreased by 4 folds, C 2 = ¼ C 1 Updated on June 25, 2020
