Any support for future Olympic activities would thus imply allegiance to such doping activities, which violates the principle of social justice. Jeopardizing athletes’ wellness is also a major ethical issue that faces the Olympics competitions. Athletes have reported being trained under inhumane conditions like swimming in poisonous water where they are not supposed to open their mouths (Rio, 2016). While the Kantian philosophy may excuse such actions on the basis that they are governed by the right motive of developing athlete competency, such actions endanger the lives of the victims and indeed violate the maxima principle due to the resultant undesirable consequences. Athletes have also reported being lowly paid and living under poor conditions during the competitions due to
ETHICAL DILEMMAS 5 lack of funds even after the IOC has reported adequate funds to support the ordeal. This insinuates elements of corruption in the Olympics so that athletes are not adequately compensated for their efforts and risks of participating in sports. Considering that numerous ethical issues have faced the Olympics in the past, the company must make important considerations before sponsoring the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Among these considerations should be the benefits that the community will derive from the event. This should show in aspects such as fairness and equal treatment of participants across the globe irrespective of racial, political, or socioeconomic affiliations. The company should liaise with the International Olympic Committee to ascertain that no participant would be excused for violation of rules and doping activities, as was the case of Russia during the 2016 Olympics. Perhaps the company should have a written a memorandum with the committee outlining the sponsor’s expectations and the consequences of violating them. The company should also focus on understanding what the 2020 Tokyo Olympic entails with regards to the event budget, participants, and activities. Analyzing the budget would reveal the purpose that the sponsor's resources would be put to and minimize the likelihood of misuse of resources by the management. Besides, the organization should review the Olympic rules and policies to ascertain the ability of the event to accommodate the minority and uphold social justice principles. Most importantly, the organization should analyze the costs and benefits of being involved in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Apparently, the company is profit-motivated, and hence its involvement in the 2020 Olympics should manifest into both tangible and intangible benefits.
