The original ECG’s were first introduced into hospitals in 1902 and provided basic information about the heart and its accompanying heartbeats. Upon my investigation into the history of the ECG machine, I found that it was invented near the beginning of the 20 th century, and worked by measuring and recording the differences in the extreme reactions from electrical stimulation of the heart. In 1909 it was discovered that ECG machines had the ability to effectively locate and diagnose irregular heartbeats. In the 1930’s ECG’s became useful in differentiating normal chest pain from real cardiac pain. The largest controversy I have found surrounding ECG machines in recent years deals with mandatory screenings. Specifically dealing with whether legislation should be passed or not which would require young athletes not only get a physical exam, but also an ECG screening before participating in their sport.
