Aspirin is a weak acid, 3-aminophenol is a weak base, and paracetamol is neutral; and this is of great importance in this experiment. Acids and bases are ionizable and there solubility in influenced by pH. Since paracetamol is neutral and is more ionizable in ethyl acetate than in water, there was a high concentration of the drug in the ethyl acetate in both the sample that the

HCl solution and the phosphate buffer therefore, it is absorbed form the stomach and the intestine. Since aspirin is a weak acid it did not ionize in the HCl solution and it has a low solubility in water; the aspirin was soluble in ethyl acetate. In the sample with the phosphate buffer, there were low concentrations of aspirin found in ethyl acetate. This is so because weak acids are highly ionized in basic solutions, and it is highly soluble in water and it has low solubility in ethyl acetate. Since 3-aminophenol is a weak base, it did not ionize well in the phosphate buffer solution and it has a low solubility in water and a high solubility in ethyl acetate while in the sample with the HCl solution, the 3-aminophenol is highly ionized and has a high solubility in water and a low solubility in ethyl acetate. Although this is not what was obtained in our experiment, this is what should have been the results. Experimenter error is probably at fault for our erroneous results. Perhaps, the spots on the silica sheet were not as uniform as possible which could have altered our results.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
