proficient language skills and the fluent communication, the international students are not
able to fully experience the United States university education system. Since there are
almost half percent of the university students are coming from other countries, the university
instructors are needed to help international students. What could the instructors do to
effectively help the international students to over come the listening comprehension
challenges? With the help of the instructors in the university classrooms, international
students will able to improve their English skills which apply to academically and socially.
III. Analysis:
Some instructors may argue that all the students should be treated equally and nobody is
going to be excused by any other reasons. Especially for the international students, they are
asked to take an English proficiency test called TOFEL to prove that they are able to understand

English and to study in the universities in the United States. However, according to Akanwa
(2015), “passing TOEFL does not always translate into proficiency in the English language.”
TOEFL test can not represent an international student’s proficiency in English. As all the
students who had taken the TOEFL test know, it is a test that is easy to get a high score on if the
students practice a lot of times. There are special techniques for students to do the tests and get a
high score on it. Even though they had passed the test, they might still not have the proficiency to
understand what the instructors say during class. According to Akanwa, since the international
students are suffering from the language problems, the instructors should provide more
opportunities to help the students to overcome the problems. Not only speaking, writing, but also
listening skills (2015).
Understanding what the instructors teach is the most important part in a
class. Students are required to know what the instructors say in order to well participate in the
class.
The instructors should create more opportunities for the international students to
communicate and interact with some of the native English speakers in order to practice their
speaking and most importantly listening skills. According to Akanwa , “This could be done by
organizing English language workshops, writing seminars, having informal conversation
partners, and integrating more English speaking and writing assignments in course syllabi”
(2015). Knowing the ways how the native speakers speak is one of the most effective ways for
