C. School Choices

In the past, kids were assigned what school they would attend based on their
address and today, kids can transfer schools because of the number of schools that
are available. A number of parents are choosing
charter
or
virtual schools.
1.
Public Schools
a. After Europeans began to settle in the British North American colonies
the schools they developed were private and attended by the children of
elite owners of property. In 1674 Massachusetts began to require towns
with 50 families to appoint a teacher and collect taxes to support the
schools. In 1785, the Land Ordinance was passed and required territories
North and West of the Ohio River to set aside land for schools. By the
1830’s, schools were attended by students from different social classes.
