While there are reputable commercial breeders there

This preview shows page 3 - 4 out of 5 pages.

While there are reputable commercial breeders, there is also a concern with "puppy mills". These are commercial breeders who breed large numbers of animals without selecting for physical or behavioral health. Puppy mills are characterized by breeding large numbers of a single breed of dog, or many crossbred "designer" dogs. They often breed females twice a year for their entire lifetime, which gives the mother little rest in between litters. Responsible breeders select animals for breeding based on both physical and behavioral characteristics while puppy mills produce as many puppies from a single mother as possible. Line breeding and interbreeding are common, with mother-son, father-daughter and sister- brother matings being the norm instead of the exception. Dams and their puppies are usually kept in crowded, non-social conditions and are not well cared for. Not all commercial breeders are puppy mills and not all pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills, but most puppy mill puppies are sold through pet stores or on the internet. Dealers collect the puppies from a number of different facilities and then transport them across the country. This is stressful on young animals and predisposes them to infection and disease. Some people adopt sickly or poor quality puppies from pet stores because they "feel sorry" for them, but, in effect, they are supporting the puppy mills and dealers that these animals come from. If you are purchasing an animal from a pet store, you should ask the manager where the animals come from in the first place. Choosing a purebred dog or cat from a reputable breeder is often a better idea. Pet Expos

These shows often have live reptile and bird sales as well, but may not be the best place to pick up a quality pet. One should remember that little turtles or lizards sold in Styrofoam bowls at a pet expo will often grow quite large and require a good deal of care. Pet expos can be a good way to meet breeders and dealers of exotic animals and then arrange for a visit or a sale later. Knowledgeable dealers will spend a little time talking with you about the
