Scientists feel that effective treatments are discarded and harmful ones making way into the health sector. The experiments are also considered dangerous .For example, vioxx is a drug that is used in treatment of arthritis and is found safe on monkeys plus five other animal species but the drug is linked with over 300,000 cases of heart attacks and strokes causing an estimated 140,000 deaths globally as stated in Cuthulan’s blog. Also in 2006, some volunteers tested a new

Surname 6 monoclonal antibody treatment (TGNI1412) in the U.K at Northwick hospital and some suffered severe allergic reactions and others almost died. The same dose when tested on 500 monkeys did not predict any dangerous side effects. According to Schardein et al (pg. 255), aspirin has proved toxic to many animals like mice, rats and cats and it should therefore not be stocked in pharmacies as per the animal testing standards. This shows that animals are totally different from humans. Animal testing relies on anecdote and is not backed up. The research keeps on producing genetically modified animals and people just believe in animal testing but there is no scientific evidence. The practice is unethical since it is wrong to sentence thinking, subjecting beings to lonely life in cages and putting them through terrifying and painful experiments as stated by Pound et al (pg. 348).Religion and traditions also prohibit causing suffering to organisms and instead humans should be merciful to all animals. Conclusion It is evident that animal testing is a contentious issue that is difficult to find solutions from the different arguments provided. There is need to choose between good and bad science that is techniques that relate directly to humans. Opponents propose the use of other non-animal research methods that are humane, effective and modern free of animal suffering offering hope of effective medical treatments should be adopted. These methods include: human based micro- dosing, in Vitro technology, computer modelling, cells and tissue culturing, 3Rs and human- patient simulators as stated by Doke &Shashikant (pg. 228) .On the other hand proponents say that adoption of alternatives such as computer models does not guarantee success in the medical field. This is because they can only be reliable if accurate information from animal research is

Man has the mandate to use animals for research. The recommendations made are ambiguous and more research that allows fair presentation of ideas should be carried out. From the ideas presented, fair policies should be made regarding animal testing.
